This years Regatta saw us take a fleet from Clipper 40’s right up to a Clipper Cordova 60 and an explorer 50 pilothouse, along with a new skipper Darrell. The weather was inconsistent this year for the first couple of days and usual reliable predictions changed as close to 24 hours before the following days cruising but the fleet managed well and even opted to do a night crossing of the Wide Bay Bar in calm conditions at full tide.
The usual stops at Mooloolaba and Peel Island on the way up got the group together and once inside Fraser Island the weather opened a wonderful window to spend three day and two nights anchored off the northern tip of Fraser. We prepared some beach bbq’s and bonfires and had a great beach spit roast on a fantastic day of weather and whale watching. Some of our owners had never been offshore before and courtesy of Lionel and Diane in the Explorer 50 took the whole group out whale watching and for some it was the first time they had seen them up close.
We meandered back to the Gold Coast after a superb few days lazing at anchor off the triangle cliffs at Fraser island and even had a great night at Urangan Marina in the new Brazilian Restaurant there at the Boat Club.
The exit crossing heading home on the Wide Bay Bar was a breeze and everyone made it home safely after 9 days away.
In 2017 we are planning a four day Friday to Monday Moreton bay Regatta in February to try to get in more unique anchorages around the bay, April we are scheduling a Clarence River 8 day trip down through Yamba, to Grafton and back while the weather is warm and then our annual trip to Fraser in September so stay tuned for those dates we will release before Christmas for your planning.
